How stressed are you? Are you aware that you are stressed or anxious, and do you have strategies in place to deal with this?
Stress can have a real impact on our health. It’s not just our mental health that it can affect, it can impact on our immunity and risk of chronic health conditions and can also cause central weight gain. Many of us have chronic stress and are activating our ‘fight or flight’ responses on a continual basis over minor things that should not cause this physiological reaction – things such as being stuck in traffic, dealing with difficult work situations, or stressing about time management. Your fight or flight response is in place to enable you to deal with real dangers and was not designed to be called upon so regularly to deal with ongoing life stresses. Eventually this can impact on your health and so it makes sense that we should all have strategies in place for dealing with everyday stress.
Yoga and meditation are excellent ways of lowering stress and can help you to learn how to breathe in a beneficial way and to become more aware of your body and mind. Mindfulness can help in every aspect of life, whether its mood control, dealing with difficult situations or weight management. An excellent resource to help you become more mindful is Headspace which takes you through daily meditations of just 10 minutes. Try it and see how different you can feel https://www.headspace.com/. I recommended this to a colleague recently and he asked me if you have to dress up as a goat to do it, but no, that’s really not necessary..;)
